If you live in the UK I thoroughly recommend watching Channel 4’s ‘Mums Make Porn’, in places this was absolutely hilarious as five ‘Mums’ come together to research and ultimately make their own ‘porn’ film. Obviously for the sake of TV, Channel 4 have pitched women with quite differing personalities and attitudes towards sex and massively differing awareness of what porn actually constitutes.

The set-up is that these women are worried by what their children see on their smartphones and devices, although some of these women’s children seem to be 18 and 20, by which time they are more than old enough to watch what they like, and indeed when asked one of the kids (who I think was 15) said she has watched ‘tons’ of porn. I thought that answer was quite surprising, I would expect the kid to say ‘I’ve watched some or other people have shown me something’, but no straight out ‘I’ve watched tons’. She then adds that Google shoves porn in her face, which I find a bit strange as I don’t think I’ve ever seen porn on any Google pages, the only time I’ve had it thrust at me is when I’m watching dodgy TV channels and I get pop-ups…

Whatever, the kids don’t seem half as bothered about the porn as the adults who are astoundingly naïve. One lady thinks their porn film should feature tickling and bursts into tears when another women pipes up that the film needs to feature anal sex. Ah, yes Sarah… this one’s the diamond in the dust here and freely admits that she watches porn for fun, and likes it! I fear she may be in for a rough ride with this bunch.

Sarah-Louise from Manchester is the natural leader of the group, and gives us two of the best moments in the whole show when first she throws up after witnessing a girl squirting and then a guy shooting his load in a porn shoot (this woman has six kids… somehow) and then gets totally burned by her own daughter when she tells her her ideas for the porn shoot. The daughter looks at her like she’s mental and exclaims ‘I think you’re being a bit too artsy-fartsy mum’.

Mousey Emma surprises, at first she comes across buttoned up, but after witnessing a Femdom scene (well…. let’s be charitable and let that go, it looks a lot like PIV sex while the guys licks the woman’s shoe to me) remarks that it was great, with the look of a woman who very much needs a little alone-time as soon as possible.

Sadly Sarah didn’t seem to get as much airtime as the rest of the women, perhaps because she doesn’t fit the narrative of the show as well as the other women. That being porn is bad, it’s all male biased, and no women would ever do any of these things for her own pleasure. Meanwhile Sarah sits in the corner demanding anal sex and tells us she’s very adventurous and likes to try new things. Later we see a coming-up clip of Sarah looking weary and telling us ‘I don’t think this film is even going to be porn the way things are going’… shocker.

Okay so the show does raise some serious points and clearly it’s not particularly good that 12 year olds watch porn on their phones. I don’t remember how old I was when I first saw porn, but it was probably about that kind of age, the difference was my first exposure to porn was Escort, Razzle and Shaven Ravers not anal fisting videos on Pornhub. Of course the UK Government is about to implement age checks on porn websites any day so that’s problem solved then? Yes, because kids will never work out a way around that will they?
