So many of the scenes depicted in this blog involve violence and coercion. But Blackmail doesn’t have to be like that. It can be quite civilised. Take this example. Godfrey is a senior civil servant, who has been in the civil service since coming down from Oxford 30 years ago.  He is well liked and well respected;  he is a private man and lives alone in a nice two bedroom flat just north of Aldgate in London. He doesn’t socialise much; he’s senior enough these days for colleagues not to comment on this.  But, of course, he has a secret.  He loves to dress in expensive women’s clothes, and transform into Margaret at weekends.  And Margaret likes to meet young men – especially rather dangerous young men.  Well now she has got Godfrey into a little spot of bother because one of these dangerous young men has her picture – and therefore Godfrey’s picture. Oh dear!  Well, no need to be concerned, Godfrey.  In return for certain favours from Margaret, and an appropriate payment or two, I’m sure that no one a the office need find out.  What would the civil service be without its secrets, eh?
