Dinah had pledged to never marry a man without her mother’s approval. Inez, her mother, was very much the matriarch. She ruled her husband. She taught Dinah, her only child, to be independent, strong and proud.

Jackson cleaned their large yards. Washed and polished all the vehicles. There was so many chores.

Jackson never complained or hesitated. He always deferred to Inez.

Dinah’s mother was satisfied that Jackson would serve her daughter well.

There was one last test.

Inez gave Dinah a birch cane. Jackson was ordered to strip and bend over a chair.
